📖 John Shaw Neilson
Poet John Shaw Neilson lived and worked in the Victorian Mallee after a childhood that began in Penola, South Australia. His family’s movements included Kaneira and a large holding north of Sea Lake, combining share-farming, scrub clearing and contract work. Poverty and difficult conditions repeatedly interrupted their plans. Neilson nevertheless developed a close eye for birds, plants and the changing natural world, observations that fed into his verse. His regional connection is sustained residence and labour, rather than birthplace. The poetry emerged alongside physically demanding work, not from a life insulated from the hardships he observed.
🌾 Sir John Gorton
John Gorton spent time at his father’s Mystic Park orchard near Lake Kangaroo as a teenager and later returned with his wife Bettina to take it over. Farming in northern Victoria preceded wartime air-force service and the political career that eventually brought him to the prime ministership. A 1946 speech at Mystic Park to returned service personnel is remembered as an early expression of his political outlook. Mystic Park was both a working home and a place where his public life began to develop.
